What Is a Fiber Drop, and Why Do I Need One?
What is a Fiber Drop?

When you think about getting fiber internet, you might picture the moment the technician hands you the WiFi password. The line running from the road to the house, called a fiber drop, rarely comes up in that imagining, but it’s an important part of getting internet to your home. Understanding what it is, how it’s installed, and when to take one can save you time, money, and even a second trip from our crew.

What Is a Fiber Drop?

A fiber drop is the stretch of fiber-optic cable that runs from the distribution point near the road to your home. That distribution point is called a Multiport Service Terminal (MST), or pedestal. Think of the pedestal as the neighborhood’s connection hub. It is where the larger fiber network splits off to serve individual addresses. The drop carries your service from that hub to a small device on the outside of your house called an Optical Network Terminal, or ONT.

The fiber drop is the last stretch of infrastructure between StratusIQ’s network and your home. The quality and condition of your fiber drop directly affect the reliability of your service.

Not every drop goes in under ideal conditions, and not every drop lasts forever. Understanding the difference helps set the right expectations from the start.

Temporary Drops

A temporary drop runs above ground from the pedestal to your home. It provides fully functional fiber service. You won’t experience slower speeds or lower-quality internet through a temporary drop, but it is not a long-term solution.

Temporary drops are most common during winter or rainy weather when frozen or saturated ground makes it unsafe or impractical to bury a line. A temporary drop gets you online right away while we wait for conditions to improve.

The line may run across your lawn or along your driveway. Fiber carries light, not electricity, so the line is not electrically dangerous. However, snowplows, lawnmowers, heavy equipment, and yard tools can damage it. Keep the area clear until we return to complete the permanent installation. We’ll install the permanent line as soon as conditions allow.

Permanent Drops

A permanent drop provides the long-term connection between your home and the network. While a temporary drop remains above ground until conditions improve, a permanent drop is built to last for years with minimal maintenance.

There are two types of permanent fiber drops. The type used at your home depends on your property’s layout, terrain, and how StratusIQ built the network in your area.

Buried Drops

A buried drop runs underground from the pedestal to your home. Underground placement protects the line from weather, equipment, and accidental contact, making it the more durable option over the long term.

Before digging begins, our crew locates and marks underground utilities through the 811 call-before-you-dig process. This required safety step protects both the installation crew and existing infrastructure on your property.

Once your buried drop is in place, make note of where the line runs. Before starting any landscaping or digging projects, call 811 to have utilities marked. This helps prevent cut cables and service interruptions.

Aerial Drops

An aerial drop runs above ground, typically strung along utility poles from the pedestal to your home. In rural service areas, aerial drops are often the practical choice when underground installation isn’t feasible. Rocky terrain, long distances, or certain property layouts can make burying a line difficult or cost prohibitive.

Aerial drops are a reliable, long-term solution, though they are more exposed to weather and physical contact than buried lines. If you notice anything making contact with the line, such as a fallen branch or equipment, let us know right away.

Steps of Installing a Fiber Drop During Construction

When StratusIQ builds in a new service area, crews may install drops during construction before homeowners sign up for service. They run the drop to the outside of the structure and leave it ready for activation whenever the homeowner decides to subscribe.

We always ask permission before bringing a drop to your home. You don’t need to do anything at this stage, and you are not required to subscribe to StratusIQ services. The drop remains in place until you’re ready to connect. According to a 2023 Fiber Broadband Association study, fiber internet can add up to 4.9% value to your home.

During Your Installation Appointment

If crews did not install a fiber drop during construction, our team completes that work during your service appointment. This includes running the drop cable from the pedestal to your home, mounting the ONT, and testing the connection before we leave.

Installation appointments may take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of days depending on your property and crew availability. Some installations require two visits: one for construction crews to install the drop and another for a technician to connect and activate service inside the home.

Large Lots and Extended Fiber Drops

Most standard installations are included as part of the normal construction process. However, some homes sit on large lots where the distance between the road or pedestal and the home is much longer than average. In these cases, additional construction may be necessary to bring fiber to the residence.

Longer fiber runs require additional materials, labor, and installation time. For that reason, homes on large lots may incur an additional construction fee. This fee helps cover the cost of extending dedicated fiber service to the home while maintaining the same reliability and performance standards found throughout the StratusIQ network. If your property requires additional construction, our team will review the work and any associated costs with you before installation begins.

Your Connection Starts at the Curb

The fiber drop may be a small piece of the full installation, but it’s the piece that makes everything else possible. StratusIQ manages the full path from the pedestal to your home, so you don’t have to think much about it.
